Old Guy Disease You Can Get When You’re Young - Cataracts
As you age, the lenses of your eyes thicken and cloud up. Cataract removal is the most common surgery among people 65 and older. But the lens-thickening process can accelerate, leaving you with seriously impaired vision a lot earlier than 65. A few precautions can keep your baby blues in the clear.
Cover your eyes. Any direct injury to the eye can speed up cataract formation. Wear safety glasses or goggles during any sport or other activity in which you could be smacked in the eyeball.
Dim the light. People who have had longterm, unprotected exposure to sunlight tend to be at greater risk for cataracts. Treat yourself to a pair of shades with UV protection.
Be a helmet head. Any injury to the head, not just the eye, can hasten hardening and clouding of the lens. Wear a helmet if there’s a chance of taking one on the bean.
